'MILAN' ~ What a wonderful name!
สำหรับฉัน... ชื่อ "มิลาน" นั้น มีความไพเราะจับใจและมีความหมายตั้งแต่ครั้งแรกที่ได้ยิน
เรื่องนั้นมีอยู่ว่า เมื่อคราวที่ฉันกำลังตั้งครรภ์ ทั้งฉันและสามีก็ได้พยายามหาชื่อสำหรับตั้งให้ลูก ไม่ว่าจะเป็นลูกผู้หญิง...ลูกผู้ชาย...แฝดชาย...แฝดหญิง...แฝดหญิงชาย...หรือแม้แต่แฝดสาม... ทำไปทำมาจึงได้รายชื่อยาวกว่าสองหน้ากระดาษ แต่ฉันเองก็มีข้อแม้อยู่เพียงอย่างเดียวว่า ควรจะต้องเป็นชื่อที่คนไทยทุกคนสามารถออกเสียงได้อย่างไม่ผิดเพี้ยน
และในบรรดาชื่อสำหรับ "ลูกสาว" นั้น ฉันพอใจชื่อ Victoria มากเป็นพิเศษ แต่ยังติดอยู่ที่ว่า คนไทยส่วนใหญ่แล้ว มักจะเรียกว่า "วิกตอเรีย" หรือไม่ก็ "วิคทอเรีย" ซึ่งไม่ใช่แบบอย่างที่พวกฝรั่งมังค่าจะออกเสียงสำเนียงกัน สามีสุดที่รักของฉันจึงได้เล่าเรื่องให้ฟังว่าเขาได้เคยพบเจอแฝดหญิงสามคนที่มีเชื้อสายชาวโปรตุเกส และคนหนึ่งนั้นมีชื่อว่า "Milan"
ทันทีที่ฉันได้ยินชื่อ "Milan" ฉันจึงตกลงใจในทันใดว่า "ใช่แล้ว หากเป็นลูกสาว ฉันจะให้ชื่อว่า "มิลาน" เพราะคนไทยคนไหนๆ ก็ต้องอ่านออกเสียงว่า "มิ-ลาน" ไม่มีผิดเพี้ยนไปได้" และนั่นจึงเป็นที่มาของชื่อ "มิลาน" ของ "น้องมุก" ลูกสาวสุดที่รักยิ่ง ซึ่งงานต่อจากนั้นของฉัน ก็คือการสรรหาตั้งชื่อไทย ซึ่งจะใช้เป็นชื่อกลางต่อจากชื่อต้น "มิลาน"
ไม่ง่ายเลยสำหรับฉันที่จะหาชื่อไทยที่เท่และคล้องจองกับ "มิลาน" แต่พอดีกับที่ฉันนั้นชื่นชอบไข่มุกอยู่เป็นทุน และสามีก็ได้ซื้อแหวนไข่มุกให้ตอนไปฮันนีมูนที่ภูเก็ต ไปๆ มาๆ ฉันก็เลยจับโน่นชนนี่ผสมกันออกมาเป็น "มุกวรินทร์" แปลว่า "ไข่มุกแห่งท้องทะเล"
To me, the name "Milan" is so beautiful since the first time that I heard about it.
The story began when I was pregnant. My husband and I tried to name our child. It didn't matter if we would have a boy or a girl, twin boys or twin girls, or even the triplets! We named them all, and came up with a two page list of possible names. However, I only wanted a name which was easy for the Thais to pronounce!
Among the girl's names, which I liked the most at that time was "VICTORIA". However, I was a little uncomfortable with the way the Thais would pronounce it. My husband then told me a story of triplet girls, one of which was named "Milan".
As soon as I heard the name "Milan" I thought that was it! We would definitely name our daughter "Milan". All the Thais will also call her "mi-lan" with no problems of pronunciation. Therefore, that is the origin of our daughter's name. My next issue was then, which Thai name to use for her middle name?
It was not too easy for me to find a nice modern Thai name to be matching with Milan. Since my favorite gemstone is always "pearl" and my husband gave me a beautiful pearl ring on our honeymoon trip in Phuket. Therefore, I came up with anything "pearl" or "MOOK" in Thai... to be "Mookvarin", meaning "pearl of the ocean".
แล้วก็มาถึงคราวที่ต้องเขียนออกมาเป็นภาษาอังกฤษ จึงได้ความว่า "Mookvarin" แต่พอให้ว่าที่คุณพ่อ (ขณะนั้น) ลองออกเสียง ครั้งไหนๆ เขาก็จะออกเสียงเป็น "มุก-วา-ริน" ฉันเลยส่งตัวเลือกสองแบบ คือ "มุกวรินทร์" กับ "มุกวาริน" ไปให้คุณตาคุณยายและป้าๆ ได้พิจารณา ซึ่งทุกคนต่างก็ลงความเห็นว่าชอบ "มุกวาริน" มากมาย ซึ่งฉันเองก็ได้ให้คำแปลไว้อย่างไพเราะว่า "ไข่มุกแห่งสายน้ำ" และนั่นจึงเป็นที่มาของชื่อ "มิลาน มุกวาริน" ของ "น้องมุก"
However, the way my husband always pronounced it was, mook-vaa-rin, not mook-varin as I originally wrote in Thai. I thus came up with another way of writing that name in Thai, meaning "pearl of the river". I asked my parents and sisters to help choosing the name. All preferred "pearl of the river" not "pearl of the ocean". And that is how "Nong Mook" was named "Milan Mookvarin".
เมื่อเราสามคน พ่อ-แม่-ลูก ได้เดินทางกลับมาเมืองไทย คุณยายเป็นคนแรกที่ชมฉันว่า "หนูตั้งชื่อลูกได้เหมาะสมจริงๆ เพราะน้องมุกนั้นขาวและผิวสวยเหมือนไข่มุก และชื่อ 'มุกวาริน' นั้น แม่ก็ชอบมากๆ เลย" ฉันเองได้แต่ยิ้มด้วยความภูมิใจ
และเมื่อคราวที่เราสามคน พ่อ-แม่-ลูก ได้ไปเดินที่ตลาดนัดสวนจตุจักร ก็ได้มีน้องๆ ผู้หญิงเข้ามาทักทายและถามชื่อเสียงเรียงนามของน้องมุก พอได้ยินว่าน้องมุกมีชื่อจริงว่า "มิลาน" น้องคนหนึ่งก็กรี๊ดและบอกให้ฉันไปหาอ่านนวนิยายเรื่อง "เจ้าชาย" ของ โสภาค สุวรรณ ซึ่งนางเอกของเรื่องนั้นมีชื่อว่า "มิลาน"
When we were in Thailand, my mom told me what a wonderful name I gave to our daughter. She said that Nong Mook's skin was as beautiful as a pearl. I was very proud.
When we visited the Jatujak market, many girls greeted Nong Mook and asked about her real name. When they heard the name "Milan", the girls screamed and suggested me to read a novel "The Prince" because the heroin's name is also "Milan".
และอยู่มาวันหนึ่ง เมื่อน้องมุกอายุประมาณ 6 ขวบ ฉันได้ไปส่งน้องมุกเรียนเต้นบัลเลต์ที่สตูดิโอ ได้มีคุณยายคนหนึ่งเข้ามาถามฉันว่า
"เธอได้ป้ายทะเบียนรถ 'MILAN 1' นี้มาได้อย่างไร"
ฉันจึงรีบตอบด้วยความภาคภูมิใจว่า "ลูกสาวฉันชื่อ 'MILAN' ค่ะ พอดีสามีฉันซื้อรถคันใหม่เมื่อวันที่ 19 มิถุนายน 1999 ในวันรุ่งขึ้นฉันจึงได้ไปขอป้ายทะเบียน MILAN แต่ว่ามีคนเอาไปใช้แล้ว ฉันจึงได้ 'MILAN 1' มาแทน"
แล้วคุณยายคนนั้นก็ถามฉันต่อด้วยความกระตือรือร้นว่า "ลูกสาวเธอเกิดปีอะไร"
"1999" ฉันตอบ
เธอถามต่ออีกว่า "เกิดเดือนอะไร"
ฉันตอบว่า "21 มกราคม 1999"
เธอบอกฉันด้วยความตื่นเต้นต่อไปอีกว่า "ลูกชายคนหนึ่งของฉัน เคยไปทำงานอยู่ที่เมือง Milan ประเทศอิตาลี และหลงรักเมือง Milan มาก พอมีลูกสาวซึ่งเกิดเมื่อวันที่ 21 พฤษภาคม 1999 จึงตั้งชื่อว่า Milan และได้ไปขอป้ายทะเบียนรถเป็น MILAN" และเธอก็บอกว่าครอบครัวลูกชายเธอนั้นอยู่อาศัยอยู่ที่เมือง Cranston มลรัฐโรดไอแลนด์

When Milan was about 6 years old, I took her to dance at a studio. There I met a grandmother, who walked towards me and asked,
"How did you get this license plate 'MILAN 1'?"
I proudly answered, "Oh, my daughter's name is Milan. My husband got a new car in June 1999. I went to register and requested a license plate "MILAN". But it was not available, somebody already took it, so I got 'MILAN 1' instead."
That grandmother asked, "What year was your daughter born?"
"1999" I replied.
She continued to ask, "What month?"
I said, "January 21, 1999"
She was so excited telling me that she had a grand-daughter named "MILAN" whose birthday is May 21, 1999. Her son (the girl's father) worked in Milan for some time and fell in love with it. He then named his daughter after the city. And after his daughter was born, he requested a license plate "MILAN". She and I hoped for the two "Milan" to meet some day.

I excitedly told this awesome story to my husband and his mother. I thought that I preferred "MILAN 1" to just "MILAN" with its meaning that Milan is our only child and she definitely is number one".
วันรุ่งขึ้น น้องมุกไปโรงเรียน และมีเพื่อนชายคนหนึ่งเข้ามาถามว่า "เมื่อวานตอนเย็น เธอได้คุยกับคุณยายของฉันหรือ เห็นคุณยายบอกว่า สักวันหนึ่งจะจัดให้เธอกับญาติของฉันคนที่ชื่อ 'Milan' ได้พบกัน"
Milan went to school the follwing day. Her friend asked if she met with his grandmother last night. He told her that his grandma wanted his cousin "Milan" to eventually meet her some day.
เมื่ออายุ 10 ขวบ น้องมุกได้รับเชิญให้ไปงานวันเกิดของเพื่อนชายคนหนึ่ง คนที่ได้ชื่อว่ารวยที่สุดในห้อง ซึ่งจัดงานที่บ้านคฤหาสน์หลังงาม และวันนั้น ญาติๆ ของเพื่อนชายคนนั้นก็ได้มาร่วมงานด้วย และญาติคนหนึ่งก็คือ "Milan" หลานคนที่คุณยายคนนั้นเคยกล่าวถึงเมื่อหลายปีก่อน
ฉันเองก็เพิ่งจะได้มีโอกาสพบกับคุณแม่ของ "Milan" เป็นครั้งแรกเช่นกัน และจึงได้ทราบความจริงว่า หลังจากที่ Milan เกิดในเดือนพฤษภาคม 1999 ต่อมาในเดือนมิถุนายนคุณพ่อก็ได้ไปจดทะเบียนรถคันใหม่และขอป้ายทะเบียนเป็น "MILAN" แต่พอดีว่ามีคนใช้แล้ว จึงขอเป็น "MILAN 1" ซึ่งก็มีคนใช้แล้วเช่นกัน เขาจึงได้ "MILAN 2" มาในที่สุด

When Milan was 10, she was invited to a birthday party. It was held at the boy's home and he is one of the richest kids in school, living at a small mansion. His cousin "Milan" was also there.
It was also my first time to meet the other Milan's mom. We then talked about the story of the license plates. After Milan was born in May 1999, her dad went to register for a license plate "MILAN" but it was not available. He also couldn't get "MILAN 1" but was granted "MILAN 2" instead.
Both Milans are lovely, same age, and same height. In addition, they are part Italian and both were born and live in Rhode Island. I wish I took a photo of the two of them.
'MILAN' What a wonderful name!
